Yesterday was one of those days I’m glad I bother to look at Pitchfork’s daily record reviews. It didn’t register immediately, but Alex Turner is of course the frontman for Arctic Monkeys and this is a 6 song soundtrack EP for the movie Submarine. The film, directed by Richard Ayoade, was just released in the UK, but won’t see its American debut until June 3rd 2011.
The first 4 tracks find Turner in hushed, mostly acoustic mode which Paul Thompson’s review so aptly likened to the work of Richard Hawley (see “Glass In The Park”). Turner certainly has a way with words. I am particularly fond of the wordplay on “It’s Hard To Get Around The Wind.” The opening verse is well done, It’s like you’re trying to get to heaven in a hurry/And the queue was shorter than you thought it would be/
And the doorman says, “you need to get a wristband.”
I adored Alex Turner’s side project, The Last Shadow Puppets, but these tunes aren’t nearly as strong as that collaboration with Miles Kane. The Submarine(OST) really hits its stride with the addition of bass and drums to the mix on standout “Stuck On The Puzzle” and closer “Piledriver Waltz.”
