Grizzly Bear come to The Riviera Theatre tomorrow night for what by my estimation will be their debut headlining gig in Chicago. My first exposure to the band was an opening slot for TV On The Radio promoting Yellow House at Metro in October of 2006. Following that, Grizzly Bear played Pitchfork Music Fest the summer of 2007, Lollapalooza 2008, Pitchfork again in 2009 and thus never headlined here for Veckatimest? (Ednote: OK, I see they played 2 nights at Metro in late September 2009. The Riviera is certainly their largest Chicago headlining gig to date.)
Grizzly Bear is probably in my personal top three of bands currently working today. Shields, released this month, delivers another fruitful batch of songs that were, for the first time in their career, built collaboratively from the ground up as opposed to individual members bringing in and presenting their own compositions.
Tickets are still available for $35 for the all ages show that kicks off with Lower Dens at 7:30pm. I’d suggest not missing them either.
